Constantin Silvestri Festival

A tribute to one of the greatest Romanian conductors of all time

Constantin Silvestri (1913 - 1969)

A Genius of the Baton

Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969) was one of the greatest Romanian conductors and one of the most fascinating musical personalities of the 20th century. Born in Bucharest, he studied at the Royal Conservatory and debuted as a conductor at the age of just 17.

He served as music director of the Bucharest Philharmonic and, after emigrating to Great Britain in 1957, led the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, transforming it into an internationally acclaimed ensemble. His intense and visionary interpretations of Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and Enescu remain legendary.

"Music must not merely be played — it must be lived, with every fiber of the soul."

— Constantin Silvestri
